More Than a Basketball Game: Building Friendships, Confidence and Hope Together

by | Jul 7, 2026

At Ray of Hope, we believe that every meaningful relationship begins with understanding, kindness and shared experiences. While classrooms play an important role in education, some of life’s greatest lessons are learned when people connect through simple activities, laughter and teamwork.

Recently, we were honoured to welcome students and lecturers from the School of Education at Quest International University (QIU) for a special basketball programme with our children and young adults. What started as a sports activity quickly became a day filled with friendship, learning and unforgettable memories.

The programme brought together QIU students from the Bachelor of Special Needs Education (Hons) programme and the children and young adults at Ray of Hope. Through basketball drills, games and interactive activities, everyone had the opportunity to learn from one another in a relaxed and supportive environment.

For many people, basketball is simply a sport. For us, it became a bridge that connected hearts.

Learning Goes Beyond the Classroom

Students studying Special Needs Education spend many hours learning theories, teaching methods and child development. However, real understanding comes from spending time with individuals with special needs, listening to them, communicating with them and appreciating their unique personalities.

During the programme, QIU students were able to experience first-hand what inclusive education truly means. They learned how to encourage participation, adapt activities based on different abilities, and communicate with patience and empathy.

At the same time, our children gained confidence by interacting with new friends who accepted them for who they are. There were smiles, high-fives, laughter and moments of encouragement throughout the day. Every successful pass, every basket scored and every word of support reminded everyone that success looks different for each individual.

This is exactly the kind of experience that helps build a more inclusive society.

Every Child Has Potential

At Ray of Hope, we work every day to create opportunities for children and young adults with special needs to develop their independence, confidence and social skills.

Many of our children may face different learning challenges, but they also possess amazing strengths. Some have excellent memories. Others are creative, energetic or naturally caring towards others. When given the right environment and encouragement, they continue to surprise us with what they can achieve.

The basketball activities were designed to focus on participation rather than competition. Everyone was encouraged to join at their own pace. Instead of worrying about winning, participants celebrated teamwork, effort and personal achievement.

This positive atmosphere allowed our children to feel safe, valued and included.

Watching them smile proudly after making a successful shot or encouraging their teammates reminded us once again that every child deserves the opportunity to shine.

A Partnership That Continues to Grow

This basketball programme is not the first collaboration between Ray of Hope and Quest International University.

Over the years, our partnership has continued to grow through various meaningful community engagement programmes. In 2025, QIU’s Faculty of Business and Management organised the Family Day Bowling Bash, bringing together students, staff and our residents for a day of fun and friendship. Our children have also enjoyed participating in campus events such as the Soto Lamongan Charity Festival and the School of Education’s Jingle Fiesta, where they experienced festive celebrations, games and cultural activities together with the university community. These programmes have created lasting memories while allowing university students to better understand the importance of inclusion and community service.

Each programme may be different, but the purpose remains the same — building genuine relationships that create positive change for everyone involved.

We deeply appreciate QIU’s continuous commitment to supporting our children, not only through donations or one-time visits, but through meaningful engagement that creates lasting impact.

Creating Future Educators with Compassion

As an organisation that serves children and young adults with special needs, we understand how important compassionate educators are.

Knowledge is important, but kindness, patience and empathy are equally valuable. Future teachers who have meaningful interactions with people with disabilities are more likely to create classrooms where every child feels accepted and respected.

During the basketball session, we saw QIU students encouraging participants who were shy, celebrating every small achievement and adapting activities to suit different abilities. These may seem like simple actions, but they reflect the qualities that make great educators.

We are proud to play a small role in helping future teachers develop these important values.

Strong Communities Are Built Through Partnership

No organisation can work alone.

Creating opportunities for children with special needs requires collaboration between families, educators, universities, volunteers, businesses and the wider community.

Our partnership with Quest International University demonstrates how different organisations can come together to achieve a common goal — creating a more inclusive society where everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and contribute.

When university students volunteer their time, they not only support our children but also become advocates for inclusion within their own communities.

This ripple effect extends far beyond a single event.

Thank You for Walking This Journey With Us

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the lecturers, students and leadership team at Quest International University for their dedication, enthusiasm and genuine care.

Your willingness to spend time with our children has created memories that will stay with them for a long time. More importantly, your presence reminds them that they are valued, accepted and capable of achieving great things.

Together, we are building more than programmes.

We are building friendships.

We are building understanding.
